Famous NH Authors

New Hampshire has produced some of the finest writers of all time. NH authors are highly respected and seen in all areas of literature and writing. Exceptional and noteworthy writers have emerged throughout each century New Hampshire has been around.

Jeremy Belknap

Jeremy Belknap NH AuthorJeremy Belknap was one of the first NH authors to emerge. Born in Boston, MA in 1744, he moved to Portsmouth in 1764 where he studied to theology. Over the years he developed a fondness for New Hampshire and began his defining work, writing the “History of New Hampshire.” These three volumes was the template for how histories are to be written. After his death he was named America’s best native historian.  Belknap also wrote one of the early accounts of travels in the White Mountains – Journal Of A Tour To The White Mountains In July, 1784 – a recent printing can still be purchased through Amazon.

Ernest Estlin

E. E. Cummings NH AuthorErnest Estlin Cummings (E.E. Cummings) is one of the most well known NH authors. His poetry was innovative and he has been called the most influential poet of the 20th century. Although born in MA, he happily spent every summer at Joy Farm in Madison, NH. He loved New Hampshire and wrote his mother saying “I wouldn’t give an inch of New Hampshire for all the rest of New England.” His first public work was a novel titled “The Enormous Room” and his first book of poetry was called “Tulips and Chimneys.

Charlene Billings

Charlene Billings - Spring Peepers are CallingCharlene Billings is a NH author who is a teacher and writes children’s science books. Born in Manchester she still lives in Nashua. She has written many science books including “Spring Peepers are Calling”, “Space Station” and a number of topics in the “Facts on File Science Sourcebooks” series.

Berneen M. Bratt

Berneen Bratt - NH AuthorBorn in Laconia, NH, Berneen M. Bratt writes primarily non-fiction books when she is not teaching elementary school. She has spent the majority of his life in New Hampshire and is currently living in Durham. One of the books of this NH author, “No time for Jello” is a true story of one family’s struggle to adjust to a child with cerebral palsy.

Dan Brown

Dan Brown - NH AuthorDan Brown is probably the most famous contemporary NH authors. He was born and raised in Exeter, NH. He quit teaching in 1996 and wrote “Digital Fortress” which kick started his thriller career. His most famous book, “The Da Vinci Code” has sold more than 40 million copies all over the world and was made into a feature film.
